Area Events: Walk A Mile In Her Heels

16 Oct

As many of you are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and seemingly everywhere there’s a splash of pink reminding people to contribute towards eradicating this disease. That spirit will be on display at Myrtle Beach Mall on October 25th when the mall and McLeod Health partner up to present “Walk A Mile In Her Heels”, a fundraising event supporting the Horry County Susan G. Komen For The Cure foundation.

Beginning that morning at 9:00 am, participants are invited to meet up in the parking lot to be part of a giant pink human ribbon. Pink-themed refreshments will be served and door prizes will be awarded. The festivities continue with local artist Scott Kingston will create a painting utilizing help from guests of the event.  Throughout the afternoon, McLeod Health, Coastal Cancer Center will be on site to answer questions and to perform free medical screenings to guests who qualify.

The main part of the event begins at 4:00 pm with the one-mile “Walk A Mile In Her Heels” trek taking place within the Myrtle Beach Mall. Registration is $10 ($12 day of the event) and participants receive a free t-shirt. Retailers will also be offering special discounts and deals to all who participate as well as giving out door prizes. Refreshments will be served afterward in front of the Ladies Belk Store.

Make sure to drop by the Myrtle Beach Mall on October 25th for a fun, positive and informational event during the “Walk A Mile In Her Heels” fundraiser! Fun Facts: Piers of the Grand Strand

16 Jan

One of the most distinctive landmarks of any beach area are the piers that adorn its coastline, and the Grand Strand is no different.  With eight piers located from Surfside Beach to Cherry Grove, fantastic fishing and sightseeing are waiting for visitors to the Myrtle Beach area.  Here are a few of the most popular options for tourists!

  • Cherry Grove Fishing Pier: Located in the Cherry Grove area of North Myrtle Beach, the Cherry Grove Fishing Pier has a history dating back to its construction in the 1950’s of providing its visitors with memorable fishing adventures.  For example, in 1964, a world-record 1780-lb tiger shark was landed by Walter Maxwell off the pier! While we can’t guarantee every catch to be that large, it’s a good indication of the kind of action anglers can anticipate.  Measuring in at 985 feet, this pier features a unique two-story observation deck at the end and a tackle shop and restaurant at its base. They can be contacted at 843-249-1625 for more information.
  • Second Avenue Pier: Built in 1936, the 905-foot Second Avenue Pier is a favorite of tourists.  Considered the southern anchor of the Boardwalk, it’s one of the best places to take in the sights and sounds of Myrtle Beach.  For a fee, guests are welcome to fish off the pier and take their shot at mackerel, flounder and even barracuda! Guests can also take advantage of their open-air bar and full-service restaurant, both great for starting or ending your day with a fantastic Atlantic view.  More information can be found on their website.
  • Pier 14: With great location in central Myrtle Beach, Pier 14 is another popular tourist spot.  Home of the Pier 14 Restaurant and Lounge, a fantastic dining experience is to be had with a menu featuring local seafood and steaks. A large gift and tackle shop is on-site, offering a sprawling assortment of various knick-knacks and souvenirs.  Guests are able to fish directly off the pier for a small fee, and the tackle shop rents rods and reels for those that don’t have their own. To learn more, check out their website.
  • Springmaid Pier: At a whopping 1068 feet long and 36 feet wide, Springmaid Pier holds the title of largest pier on the Grand Strand.  Known as a hot spot for Spanish Mackerel (the state record was set here) and Tarpon (the largest caught was a 125-lb mammoth), a top-notch fishing experience will be had by guests.  Their full-service tackle and gift shop makes sure you have all the gear you need to land a big one, and when the day is done, the Barnacles Bar and Grill offers guests tasty meals and icy-cold drinks.

Did you know…? The Nature of Myrtle Beach

13 Jan

We all know about the man-made attractions of the Grand Strand, like Broadway at the Beach, the Boardwalk and Barefoot Landing, and we all know that those are great places to have fun.  But, did you know that there are plenty of pristine and unspoiled areas to enjoy all the natural beauty  of the South Carolina coast?  Here are a few great suggestions to relax and take in the picturesque scenes this remarkable area has to offer.

  • Myrtle Beach State Park: Located just off the shoreline in southern Myrtle Beach, the lush forests of the Myrtle Beach State Park provide a great retreat from the bustling tourist areas.  Featuring quiet nature trails, educational seminars and great fishing from the Myrtle Beach pier, there is plenty to keep visitors occupied.  Campsites are available, as well as six rental cabins.  For more information, call them at 843-238-5325 or visit their website.
  • Huntington Beach State Park: The Murrells Inlet location of Huntington Beach State Park encompasses lowcountry greenery and wildlife with magnificent landmarks like Atalaya, the breathtaking home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, original owners and curators of the park.  Local wildlife such as alligators, egrets and loggerhead turtles are prominent, and the park offers great opportunities for surf fishing.  They can be contacted at 843-237-4440 and more information is available on their website.
  • Brookgreen Gardens: Another legacy of the Huntingtons, Brookgreen Gardens is a beloved treasure of the Grand Strand.  Known for its remarkable statue and sculpture collection and gorgeous botanical gardens, Brookgreen Gardens also offers extensive seminars in the fields of sculpture, horticulture and history.  For more information, call 843-235-6000 or visit their website.
