Area Events: Walk A Mile In Her Heels

16 Oct

As many of you are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and seemingly everywhere there’s a splash of pink reminding people to contribute towards eradicating this disease. That spirit will be on display at Myrtle Beach Mall on October 25th when the mall and McLeod Health partner up to present “Walk A Mile In Her Heels”, a fundraising event supporting the Horry County Susan G. Komen For The Cure foundation.

Beginning that morning at 9:00 am, participants are invited to meet up in the parking lot to be part of a giant pink human ribbon. Pink-themed refreshments will be served and door prizes will be awarded. The festivities continue with local artist Scott Kingston will create a painting utilizing help from guests of the event.  Throughout the afternoon, McLeod Health, Coastal Cancer Center will be on site to answer questions and to perform free medical screenings to guests who qualify.

The main part of the event begins at 4:00 pm with the one-mile “Walk A Mile In Her Heels” trek taking place within the Myrtle Beach Mall. Registration is $10 ($12 day of the event) and participants receive a free t-shirt. Retailers will also be offering special discounts and deals to all who participate as well as giving out door prizes. Refreshments will be served afterward in front of the Ladies Belk Store.

Make sure to drop by the Myrtle Beach Mall on October 25th for a fun, positive and informational event during the “Walk A Mile In Her Heels” fundraiser! Area Events: 2014 Quidditch World Cup

27 Aug

North Myrtle Beach is abuzz with the impending opening of the brand new North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex scheduled for March 1, 2014, and they have secured the rights to a unique sports championship to celebrate its birth.

Coming soon to North Myrtle Beach: the 2014 Quidditch World Cup!

The International Quidditch Association’s 2014 World Cup will be held April 5-6 at the complex, and expects to bring in teams and spectators from all around the world. Initially a fringe sport inspired by its portrayal in the Harry Potter novel series, Quidditch now is played at over 300 universities and high schools in the US, Australia and Europe. The sport involves players “riding” broomsticks (unlike the portrayal in the novel, they don’t fly) and utilizes three balls: the bludger (typically a dodgeball), the quaffler (typically a volleyball, thrown through one of three vertical hoops placed on the pitch) and the snitch (a tennis ball in a sock, carried by a neutral snitch runner). As played by college teams, the size of the field can vary, and can encompass the entire college campus in some instances. Players can score points by throwing the quaffler through the hoops on the pitch, and the object of the game is to capture the snitch. There are plenty of other intricacies to the sport, and we would highly suggest reading up on Muggle Quidditch for the full explanation.

Speed, power, agility, tenacity: all are attributes a true Quidditch master must possess.

The International Quidditch Association hosts over 25 tournaments a year, and awarded North Myrtle Beach the 2014 World Cup hosting privileges after it submitted a bid for the competition. According to the IQA website:  “North Myrtle Beach put in a fantastic bid, which includes free use of their facilities and other amenities as well as robust financial support. Together with a new IQA policy called Stay & Play, the IQA will be able to give back to teams with lower per-player registration costs, free parking, and an unrestricted ability to bring food and drinks into the complex.”

The North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex aims to bring in many tournaments of various sports, from baseball and softball to rugby and ultimate Frisbee. The complex will feature 8 soccer/football/lacrosse fields, 6 baseball/softball fields, a 27-acre lake, a 1-acre dog park, picnic shelters, playgrounds and an amphitheater. It is scheduled to open in March 2014.

Make sure to book your trip early, since this is bound to be a hugely popular event! Head over to Barefoot Resort Vacations for deals on a great condo to accommodate your stay!
